HOW WE GOT OVER: ARTISTIC SOULS LOOK BACK AND WONDER
FAIRFIELD COUNTY’S 2007 AFRICAN-AMERICAN ART EXHIBITION

Exhibition Open to the Public
January 15 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day) Through March 4

Stamford, CT, January 10, 2007 – The complex BLACK journey to and within America, beginning in Africa for all, moving through Europe and Brazil for some, and via the Caribbean for others is the central theme of Fairfield County’s 2007 African-American Art Exhibition, “How We Got Over: Artistic Souls Look Back and Wonder.” The exhibition is curated by Picture That, LLC, a cultural fine art consulting company headquartered in Stamford and sponsored by General Electric Company.

Fairfield County artists as well as regional and international artists will display artwork reflective of this theme, which is based on a Negro spiritual, that visually depicts the different ways African-Americans, upon arriving in the United States learned to overcome racial oppression with endurance, religion, hope, education, family ties and creativity in the form of art, song, dance and music.

“How We Got Over: Artistic Souls Look Back and Wonder,” will officially open on January 15, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and run through March 4 at the Stamford Center for the Arts’ Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Gallery of the Rich Forum, located at 307 Atlantic Street, downtown Stamford. The gallery is open to the public Monday through Saturday,10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and Sunday, from Noon to 5:00 PM.

A community reception to officially open the art exhibition at the Rich Forum will take place on Thursday, February 8 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM in the Rosenthal Gallery. This county-wide event sponsored by General Electric is free, open to the public, and will feature music, refreshments, and an Artist Talk by Dr. Cora Marshall, Chairperson, Art Department, Central Connecticut State University.

In addition to the art exhibition and opening reception, students from Stamford, Greenwich, Darien and Norwalk will display their artwork with accompanying literature that reflects the “How We Got Over” theme at a reception precluding the community-wide reception from 4:00 to 5:00 PM, which the public is also invited to attend.

Works from this exhibition can also be viewed at the Ferguson Library Auditorium Gallery, located at the corner of Broad and Bedford streets. The public is invited to view this artwork Monday through Thursday, 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, Friday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Saturday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Sunday, 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
